Prints and photographs are my opportunity to expand the narratives the suits suggest to me. The images from the Ready for Action series and preceding photographs focus on the hero in the costume, where and how he functions, what is his super power, and how does he fight. In Button-Up we see the costumed hero getting ready to go out, his wife buttoning up his costume. InWHUDD, and Knitting a Forcefield 1 and 2, the hero fights evil and protects those around him with his super power - a forcefield he generates while knitting.
The forcefield is based in two references. The first is a memory of my Grandmother. After dinner, she would sit on the couch and work on her projects. Even when the house was full with aunts, uncles, and cousins, she would be able to work happily no matter what we were doing, as though she was in a protective bubble. My second connection is to a lecture I heard in a Textile History class in school. The teacher spoke about a tradition of Northern Renaissance paintings of women doing textile work in pubs, while lecherous, drunken men hit on them. In the paintings the women physically hid in the forcefield generated by their embroidery or other textile work
